Baviaanskloof (Valley of the Baboons) World Heritage Site Mega-Reserve. A memorable journey through this ruggedly beautiful landscape. A unique wilderness experience.

Day 1:

Port Elizabeth to overnight accommodation Baviaanskloof

  • Early morning pick up at place of residence in Port Elizabeth.

  • A short trip along the handsome southern coastline we stop for a refreshing cup of coffee or tea at the wildflower reserve overlooking the Van Stadens river gorge.

  • We continue through the river pass to view the spectacular arch bridge spanning the precipitous gorge.

  • Continuing to Hankey we take in the largest Sundial in Africa and visit Sarah Baardman’ s grave, a Khoikhoi woman born in Hankey in 1787 and coerced to leave South Africa as an exhibition. Her remains were returned to her native soil after the first democratic elections from France. She was re-buried here, where she quietly overlooks the fertile Gamtoos valley of her birth, its banks neatly laid out with orchards and vegetable gardens.

  • Passing extensive citrus orchards, scented sweetly in sprin g with the millions of white blooms, we continue to the picturesque farming town of Patensie where we stop for breakfast at the Tolbos Farm stall. Here there is a wide selection of preserves and traditional foods.

  • After breakfast we depart for the start of Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, entering at Komdomo, we travel slowly through the floor of the valley, crossing the clear tannin stained waters of the Groot river a number of times, while exploring the reserve and it’s inhabitants such as Cape Buffalo, Kudu, dainty Klipspringers, Mountain Zebra, Reed Buck and Black Rhino to mention a few of the creatures found here, while of course the Chacma Baboon after which the area has been named is everywhere abundant. The nocturnal Bushpig and Leopard occur but are difficult to see.

  • We reach our accommodation in the late afternoon, check in and settle down while Alan tours prepare the evenings fire. A hearty meal is served and a well deserved nights rest in a comfortable bed awaits you.

Day 2

Baviaanskloof to Port Elizabeth

  • Early wake up for coffee, tea and rusk before a walk into the Valley’s sub-tropical thicket and fynbos habitat.

  • Returning to accommodation and depart to explore the rest of the Mega-Reserve on our way to Willowmore from where we exit the reserve.

  • Passing through the typical small Karoo town of Steytlerville where many characteristic country houses and buildings can be found some originating during the Victorian and Edwardian period with open balcony’s onto dusty streets.

  • We finally return to Port Elizabeth through the picturesque Little Karoo and the valley bushveld of the Zuurveld and Uitenhage.

Day 1

Port Elizabeth to overnight accommodation Plettenberg Bay

  • Early pick up at place of residence in Port Elizabeth and depart via the coastline to Storms River Bridge where we freshen up and get a bite of breakfast. Walk on the awesome arch bridge spanning the narrow but deep Storms River.

  • Continuing on the Garden route we stop to view the Big tree, an 800-year-old Yellowwood tree in this temperate forest before continuing to the Tsitsikamma national park (means the sound of water) for a brief photographic visit at this picturesque setting.

  • During the Canopy Tour you glide through the Afro-montane forest on 10 slides between platforms as high as 30 meters above the forest floor. Some 2 ½ hours later, after an adventurous and educational experience you exit the forest, having undertaken a journey providing an insight into this enchanting world previously only inhabited by the Birds, Bees, Baboons and Butterflies.


  • After a well-deserved lunch we depart for Bloukrans pass Bridge with its 216 meter high Bungee jump, the highest in the world (optional extra). Face your fear and jump – a countdown on the arch and off you go. This is the ultimate thrill!! Should you wish to allow the more adventurous to entertain you, sit back and enjoy the excitement from the nearby lookout.

  • After the adrenalin rush we head for the Elephant sanctuary and an unforgettable interaction with African Elephants, walk hand in trunk with them, or ride upon their backs (optional extra) and find out just how gentle these intelligent giants really are.

  • Arriving in Plettenberg Bay we check in to our Guest house overlooking the expansive Formosa Bay towards the Onteniqua Mountains. Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing on the sun deck or go for a walk on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Garden Route while listening to the sounds of the seashore. Dinner for own account. Overnight on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2

  • After breakfast we board the boat for a +- 2 hours awe-inspiring encounter with the fascinating marine life and the seasonal Great whales and the often playful Dolphin in the Bay. Guided by professional and experienced marine guides.


  • Please note, that the marine tour is weather dependent.

  • Depart Plettenberg Bay for Port Elizabeth returning via the delightfully beautiful Natures Valley a part of the Tsitsikamma National Park for a short walk and swim at this remote sea side resort. Bring those costumes.

Day 1

Port Elizabeth to overnight accommodation Great Fish River Reserve

  • Early pick up at place of residence in Port Elizabeth and depart for the Addo Elephant National Park where we break for Coffee, and a snack while searching the thickets for Africa’s Big 5.


  • After a full morning viewing the many species of Bird and antelope, Zebra and Warthog amongst the over 500 Elephants in the park, we stop for lunch at the restaurant before departing to the heart of the Frontier country, Grahamstown, a historic university City, our last stop before reaching the remote and rugged Great Fish River reserve.


  • Arrive at the Great Fish River Reserve via the low level river crossing, if possible, and stop at Fort Double Drift to explore briefly these lonely ruins of a British military outpost, with its succulent valley bushveld and panoramic views. We check into our comfortable accommodation as the sun sets over ancient Africa. Alan Tours will start the evening fire on which we prepare our meal, a traditional South African Braai, relating stories and details of the day at the fireside while a trillion stars light the night sky, before going to bed, lulled to sleep in comfortable accommodation by the sounds of the African night.

Day 2

Great Fish River Reserve to Wild Coast

  • Early wake up with coffee, tea and biscuits before departing for a morning game drive. Searching for some of the nocturnal creatures, small cats, Jackal and the shy Leopard before they lie up for the day.


  • Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before departing for the Wild Coast.

  • Traveling through picturesque countryside towards the Coast we enter the old Transkei, characterized by rural communities, living in round, colourfully painted traditional homes, constructed of mud with conical thatched roofs that are fast disappearing.


  • Stop for lunch at the Kei River Bridge before continuing for the Mbashe River, on whose banks, at Qunu and Mveso our elder statesman, Nelson “Rolihlahla” Mandela, was born and raised.


  • The road gets rougher as the scenery becomes more attractive as we wind our way to our hotel where we check in, in time to enjoy our well-earned dinner. Overnight in Sea facing Cottage on a full board basis.

Day 3

Wild Coast.

  • Early wake up for coffee, tea and biscuits before depart through coastal dune forest alive with sub-tropical bird life and monkeys heading for the Mbashe river mouth where we board the canoes to cross this magnificent river estuary.

  • We walk under the guidance of one of the local tribesmen on the deserted beach where the only foot prints to be seen are your own. Secluded rivers with the southern most crocodiles in Africa add an element of adventure while we keep our eyes open for White Rhinos, Cape buffalo and Zebra as they graze amongst the herds of Nguni cattle.


  • We reach the last point where the bleached bones of a great Humpback whale are guarded by the middens of discarded seashells left by the first nation, the ancient Khoikhoi.

  • Here we take a picnic lunch on the rocks overlooking the remnants of a shipwreck just below the waves, surrounded by Gulls and Gannets, while Whales and Dolphins surface nearby.

  • We return to the hotel for a quite rest before embarking on a short drive to the nearby Mbanyane point, a renowned and picturesque surf spot accessed through lovely forest glades.

Day 1
Port Elizabeth to Oudtshoorn

An early departure from Port Elizabeth, joining the picturesque route 62 on our way to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo. Here we stop at a historic Ostrich farm for lunch and a guided tour, after which we depart over the Swartberg pass for our overnight accommodation.

Day 2
Oudtshoorn to Vanrhynsdorp

After breakfast we browse through the historic village of Prince Albert before departing through the vast expanses of the Great Karoo until we eventually descend the escarpment to overnight in Vanrhynsdorp on the edge of the succulent Karoo and the gateway to the spring flowers. Here we check into our guesthouse in this historical town two nights rest and exploring this fascinating area with extensive wild flower destinations. Full board.


Day 3

Vanrhynsdorp

After breakfast we set off to explore this unique area at the convergence of three botanical kingdoms namely the Nama-Karoo with its predominance of short hardy shrubs or Karoo bossies (bushes). The Succulent Karoo on the Knersvlakte a region of hilly terrain covered with quartz gravel in Namaqualand, the name was derived from the gnashing of teeth due to the rough ride caused by the hard quartz stones as the early travelers crossed the area in their ox wagon, and the Cape fynbos found on the higher ground in the mountains. Each area has its own characteristic plant life and array of flowers. After a fulfilling day’s viewing this captivating landscape we return to our cool accommodation for a well-deserved evening meal and a quite nights rest at our Guesthouse. Full board basis.


Day 4
Vanrhynsdorp to Springbok

Departing after breakfast for the next leg of our journey.
We pass colourful settlements and places of interest always keeping an eye out for the latest spread of Namaqualand daisies or other flowers along the road side or further into the fields, as we head for Springbok. The town that owes its existence to copper mining, which was undertaken in the 1850’s and a reliable supply of water. It is the last settlement before the Namibian border with a nature reserve of sandy plains, dominated by Granite outcrops.

On arrival we check into our accommodation at a local Guesthouse. Full board.

Day 5
Springbok to Namaqualand National Park 

Departing from our guesthouse on the escarpment, we descend onto the sandy plains of the 150 000ha Namaqualand National Park, the heart of the succulent Karoo biome with 40% of the plant species found being endemic to this area.

We tour the area, including scenic coastal diamond mining towns where we lunch amongst the kelp and fishing shanties, seagulls and Khoisan people of this enigmatic area.
Overnight Tented camp at the very heart of the friendly flower country. Full board.

Day 6
Namaqualand National Park to Clanwilliam

Wake early for breakfast as we depart for the epicenter of the flower season, the annual Clanwilliam flower show.  Picasso, Gauguin would struggle to find the inspiration to emulate this wonderland of colour textures and freewheeling spirits of the people of the northern Cape and Namaqualand.

Here we marvel at the sheer beauty and mass of the floral displays before lunch and in the afternoon we travel to the coastal fishing villages of Stompneus Baai, Paternoster, azure blue sea, startling white beaches, colourful fishing bakkies (boats) and whitewashed fishermen’s cottages together with the spring flowers of the Sandveld which make this place a must see on a Spring flower tour.

Activities:
Visiting rooibos tea factory and veldskoen factory in Clanwilliam.
Sample the seafood delights of the area.
Cape Columbine lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse on the South African coastline.

Day 7
West Coast to Swellendam

Early wake up for breakfast, before again departing for Swellendam we enter the realm of the beautiful Cape Fold mountains.

Swellendam to Port Elizabeth

After a relaxing breakfast we depart for the Garden route to return to Port Elizabeth after a floral adventure of a life time.

Day 1

Port Elizabeth to Kenton on Sea

  • Pick up place of residence or airport in Port Elizabeth and depart for Kenton on Sea, where we check into your country cottage’s surrounded by lush, sub-tropical gardens. After check-in we head for a beach restaurant for a light meal. Returning to our cottages in the forest, to relax on your deck where you can listen to a myriad of birdlife or take a stroll on the golden sands of the beach. Boat and Horse rides are optional extras. Towards evening we transfer to the beautiful setting at Stanley’s restaurant for dinner.

Day 2

Kenton on Sea to Amatola Mountain

  • After breakfast we depart for Hogsback, a beautiful, mystical retreat in the Amatola Mountains. This is an area of deep shaded, forests, tinkling streams and gossamer waterfalls that grace the spectacular mountain slopes. We stop for a light lunch on the road. (For own account) Hogsback offers shopping opportunities at quaint Hippy colonies, displays of well-crafted pottery and other art. Eco-shrine and Labyrinth to nurture your esoterically well-being. Take long invigorating walks under the canopy of immense, ancient yellowwood trees, in remote valleys or sip red wine around the warmth of a log fire at the Lodge.

Day 3

Amatola Mountain to Addo Elephant National Park

  • After hearty breakfast we depart for Addo Elephant National Park.

  • Check into Addo and our accommodation and meet at the restaurant for lunch. After lunch we depart on our first game drive searching for more than 450 African Elephant, Buffalo, Black Rhino, Lion, Warthog, Kudu, Red Hartebeest, Eland amongst other species and bird life. Return to the rest camp for the evening meal at the park restaurant, after dinner we gather around the open fire for drinks under African skies, quietly listening to the sounds of the night before turning in for a well deserved rest. (There is an option of a night game drive in the park’s open vehicle (at own account).

    Overnight Addo Elephant National Park.

Day 4

Addo Elephant National Park to Port Elizabeth.

  • Early wake up, coffee, tea and rusks before departing for an early morning game drive with Alan Tours. We return for breakfast in the Park restaurant, pack up and board the tour vehicle for the return trip to Port Elizabeth through the park with a chance of viewing game as we return to Port Elizabeth and the end of the tour.

Day 1

Port Elizabeth to Plettenberg Bay

  • Depart Port Elizabeth through the scenic Wild side on our way to the renowned Garden route. Our first stop at the Van Stadens wildflower reserve for refreshments and a view of the spectacular Arch Bridge over this River gorge.

  • Continue to Hankey amongst the rolling hills at the start of the Baviaanskloof mega-reserve and World heritage site. Here we view the final resting place of Sarah Baardman the enigmatic Khoikhoi woman who became a symbol of the successful struggle for democracy and freedom. View the largest Sundial in the Southern hemisphere. Moving through well-attended citrus orchards, we take an early lunch (Springbok pie to die for) at a roadside restaurant and farm stall with a wide choice of traditional farm produce and preserves.

  • Continue to Storms River to stretch your legs, before stopping at the Big tree, a huge Yellowwood accessed through a charming boardwalk in the forest. After the forest we continue to the Crags where we join a guided experience through Monkey land, a natural home to rescued monkeys from around the world as well as a tour through Birds of Eden the largest Aviary in the world, housing a wide variety of beautiful birds from around the globe,

  • After a full day on the road we check into our well-positioned guesthouse overlooking the beach and the superb scenery of Plettenberg Bay.

Day 2

Plettenberg Bay to Oudtshoorn

  • Early wake up for breakfast before departing for a 2 hour Boat trip into the Bay to view up close the many Whales and Dolphins in these spectacular surroundings.

  • We return to shore and depart for the Little Karoo via a spectacular pass over the Outeniqua Mountains. We stop for lunch in the quaint village of Uniondale before continuing onto Oudtshoorn, our overnight accommodation and a well-deserved evening meal at a local restaurant.

Day 3

Oudtshoorn to De Hoop Nature Reserve

  • Early wake for breakfast before departure for a guided tour through the magnificent Cango Caves.

  • After the caves we join the renowned Route 62 taking us through vineyards and characterful villages, stopping occasional to take pictures and sample the local wines, port and sherry for which the area is known.

  • Passing spectacular scenery and the N2 to cross the Breede River on a hand powered ferry before heading for the lovely De Hoop Nature reserve near the southern most point of the African continent and our overnight accommodation in historical, renovated farm cottages.

  • Spectacular scenery and lagoon area, the reserve offers some of the finest land based whale watching in the world; literally hundreds of whales winter in these sheltered bays.

Day 4

De Hoop Nature Reserve to Cape Town

  • Wake up for an early departure for a morning game drive before breakfast. We finally approach Cape Town through expansive wheat fields and towering mountains as we descend into the flatlands before the majesty of Table Mountain and the end of the tour.

“The original Big 7 Safari” – Addo Elephant National Park and Algoa Bay

Day 1
Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay and Addo Elephant National Park


8.00 a.m. Pick up at place of residence in Port Elizabeth to arrive at the small boat harbour to check in and board the boat. Under expert guidance we embark on a 3-hour odyssey into Algoa bay. We search the protected waters of the Bay for Dolphins, Seals, Sharks and the seasonal Humpback and Southern Right Whales (in season) birthing and breeding in the temperate waters of the largest Bay in Africa.

We head for the historical St Croix island, where 20 000 pairs of African Blackfooted Penguins roost and breed amongst the other inhabitants. Many of them can be seen in the water and on the island itself. Sharks are often seen on the surface of the water on the trip to and from the islands.

After searching for and viewing the rich diversity of life in the Bay we return to the harbour for a satisfying light lunch at the Yacht club, where the setting is wonderful and the food great.

After lunch we again board the tour vehicle and depart for the Addo Elephant National Park. On entering the park we begin to search the Sub-tropical thickets for the more traditional members of the Big 5, African Elephant, Black Rhino, Cape buffalo, Lion and Leopard amongst the Antelope, Warthog and Zebra. Reptiles, a rich birdlife and diverse botanical component make this reserve a favorite game reserve for many enthusiasts.

Arriving at the main camp we check in to our comfortable accommodation. After relaxing we again prepare for an exciting sunset game drive in an open game drive vehicle, while Alan Tours prepares a traditional evening Braaivleis (Barbecue) under the African night sky for when you return from your memorable game drive.

Day 2
Addo Elephant National Park


Early wake up for coffee, tea and traditional rusks before embarking on the morning game drive in the tour vehicle. Here we stand a good chance of observing some of the nocturnal creatures before they lie up for the day.

Returning to the rest camp we take breakfast at the park restaurant before checking out. We continuing the game drive in this 40 thousand hectare game reserve while making our way out of the park to continue to the lovely remote dune fields on the northern shore of Algoa bay an extension of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, where we walk onto the dune fields to explore the coastline and the remains left by the ancient Khoikhoi people when they inhabited this area thousands of years ago. Day 1
Port Elizabeth to Prince Albert

Meet at a rendezvous and get an early departure from Port Elizabeth on the scenic R62 for Uniondale. Having packed a breakfast basket of fresh bread rolls, pickles, cheese, smoked salmon, cucumber, olives and light champagne, we stop at the side of the road for a tasty mood picnic to kick the tour off.

Our next stop is at the lovely town of Uniondale in the Western Cape where we stop for lunch. After a quick lunch we continue between the mountains towards De Rust where we stop for look around some of the interesting shops in the little village before continuing through some spectacular countryside and passes to our first night stop at a delightful guesthouse in Prince Albert.

Day 2
Prince Albert to Montagu

Leisurely wake up before a scrumptious breakfast in the refreshing breakfast room we depart to explore this gem of a Karoo town, antiques, art, furniture and many other interesting shops that line the main street. After a good session of retail therapy we continue our journey into the Cape Winelands.

We stop for lunch at a renowned hotel en-route to our overnight accommodation in Montagu taking in some spectacular scenery on the way.

Day 3
Montagu to Franschoek

Leisurely wake up and breakfast before departing to explore the western entrance to Route 62. Leaving Montagu behind we continue down a spectacular pass through spectacular countryside on our way through the heart of the Winelands.

We arrive early enough in Franschoek, the village well recognised as the gourmet centre of South Africa to explore further the delights of this lovely village. We check into our overnight accommodation on one of the nearby wine estates in this fertile valley.

Day 4
Franschoek and the Cape Winelands tours and excursions

This is a day we use to sample the many delights of the Cape Winelands and in particular the Franschoek area. There are a number of tours and activities that are available. We will discuss these with the added dollop of local knowledge and conditions before embarking on our day’s excursions. Tours and excursions are not included on this day in this costing.

Day 5
Franschoek to Calitzdorp

After an early wake up before breakfast we leave the valley, heading back over the Franschoek pass to the N2 via a short detour to an early and mission station seeped in history and set in scenic surroundings, if time allows. We continue on to the 3rd oldest town in South Africa, Swellendam, a town with over 50 national monuments.

Leaving the N2 after Swellendam we continue inland to the quaint village of Barrydale, where we again join the enigmatic Route 62 for a welcome lunch break, before continuing on to our overnight stop in Calitzdorp the centre of the Port and Klein Karoo wine industry in South Africa.

Day 6
Calitzdorp to Port Elizabeth

After an early breakfast we depart on the Route 62 to Oudtshoorn when we descend the Outeniqua pass to George and onto the coastal plains, joining the Garden route and lunch in Knysna before the final stretch back to Port Elizabeth at the end of the day.

Day 1
Port Elizabeth to a Karoo National Park


A warm welcome at the airport or your place of residence in Port Elizabeth.
Depart for a National Park in the Great Karoo. This is a spectacular Game reserve with high mountains and vast plains filled with a wide variety of game, while the apex predator here is the Cheetah, the fastest of all land animals.

We book into our accommodation after viewing some of the game on our way in. Alan tours will prepare the evening meal over the coals of a wood fire after which we turn in for the night and a comfortable rest.

Day 2
National Park


Good morning South Africa!
Leisurely morning wake up for coffee, tea and rusks and depart on an early morning game drive in our tour vehicle, viewing a wide variety of African plains and other game on this vast landscape, including herds of Springbok, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Mountain Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Gemsbok, Eland, Ostrich, Ground squirrels, Meerkats, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino, Brown Hyaena and the apex predator, the sleek Cheetah. There is a varied and wonderful bird and reptile life that makes these plains and valleys their home in this spectacular park.
Returning to our accommodation we take a well-earned breakfast at the main camp.
In the afternoon there is the chance to travel a short distance to a typical Karoo town where we stop for lunch while viewing the attractive, Eastern Cape architecture, museums and other places of interest.

Alan Tours prepares the evening meal over an open wood fire while you relax over a welcome sun downer quietly listening to the sounds of the day as it prepares for the night while Alan tours puts the final touches to the evening braai, around the glowing embers of the evening fire, under a vast diamond encrusted Karoo sky, before finally turning to your comfortable bed rooms and a refreshing nights rest.

Day 3
National Park via Graaff Reinet to Nieu Bethesda


After breakfast we check out and depart for Graaff Reinet the fourth oldest town in South Africa.
The town was founded by the VOC Dutch East India Company in 1786, being named after the then governor of Cape Colony Cornelis Jacob van de Graeff and his wife whose maiden name was “Reynet". This very attractive and well-maintained town lays 750 metres above sea level and is built on the banks of the Sunday’s river. There are many attractions to be seen in the town with some beautiful Cape Dutch architecture and the Dutch Reformed mother church on the square is a beautiful example of the Gothic style used to great effect at the time. The Church is the symbol of the town; constructed in 1886 and consecrated in 1887 the church is modelled on England’s Salisbury Cathedral.

If there is enough time we visit the Valley of Desolation, a geological phenomenon. The vertical cliffs and columns of dolerite rock that teeter precariously 120 metres above the valley floor below are a breath taking sight.

After lunch in Graaff Reinet we continue to Nieu Bethesda in the foothills of the majestic Sneeuberg Range in the middle of the Karoo Heartland. Nieu Bethesda was made famous by the eccentric Helen Martins and her helper Koos Malgas in the 50's she created the strange and wonderful Owl House and Camel yard now a museum and contains over 300 concrete and glass sculptures.

Passing through Nieu Bethesda we continue to our Guest Farm to meet our hosts, check in and depart on a guided tour of one of the shelters and hear about the Bushmen their rock art, culture and beliefs, we view Bushman paintings, listen to a Story of the Anglo Boer War of 1899 to 1902 and experience a medicinal Plant walk where we learn more about the rich history of the area guided walk and a hearty home cooked meal before making our way to bed for another restful night in quite of the Karoo landscape.


Day 4
Nieu Bethesda to a Karoo National Park.


Wake up at your leisure for coffee and tea before a delicious South African breakfast. After breakfast we depart on a guided tour of the farm museum with its Fossil collection and artefacts before we head for the hills on a guided fossil tour. After returning we check out and depart for Murraysburg where there are an exciting number of artists and their crafts to visit.

After Murraysburg we depart for the tranquillity of a National Park. The reserve is dominated by the lofty Nuweveld Mountains and rolling plains, where many species that originally occurred here now occupy their former ranges.

The Park has a wide variety of endemic wildlife. Many species have been relocated to their former ranges - such as Lion, black rhino and buffalo, as well as Cape mountain zebra. Over 20 breeding pairs of black eagle find sanctuary within the park.

Day 5
Karoo National Park to Carnarvon


Early wake up for our Tea and Coffee, after which we depart on an early morning game drive in the Park, keeping an eye out for some of the magnificent Black Eagles that inhabit these rocky crags, Lions possibly on an early morning kill, Buffalo and the elusive Black Rhino in the park.
Arriving back in time for breakfast and check out before leaving this reserve for the small village of Carnarvon and our overnight accommodation on a remote guest farm in unique, antique Corbelled houses. The early pioneers, the Voortrekkers from the only materials available to them in this harsh, arid environment, millions of flat rocks, constructed these round shaped, Corbelled houses using the rocks from foundation to roof, 6 metres above the floors. Here we experience the silent solitude of the Karoo at its best.

We have an early dinner on the farm before going to bed in this peaceful landscape.

Day 6
Carnarvon to Sutherland


Early wake up for coffee, tea and rusks before breakfast in this awe-inspiring environment.
After a short walk to appreciate the silence of this huge area and to look for the myriad of different life forms that make this place so unique, we check out and depart for Sutherland one of the coldest places in South Africa and home to the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Based on the design of the Hobby-Eberly telescope in Texas U.S.A., it consists of a primary, hexagonal mirror 11 metres wide made up of 91 individual hexagonal mirrors each one metre wide with a weight of 100kg.

Arriving in Sutherland in time to check into our accommodation, have a good lunch at one of the local restaurants before and departing on a guided tour of the Observatory some distance outside the village.

Returning to the village we have time to enjoy more of the local cuisine for dinner before joining local astronomer Juergen Wagener for some fascinating stargazing.

Returning to our accommodation for another peaceful sleep in our historical Guesthouse in the coldest place in South Africa, the village of Sutherland.

Day 7
Sutherland through Ceres to Cape Town


Leisurely wake up before breakfast, after which we check out and depart on the last days journey through some of the driest parts of South Africa known as Die Moordernaars Karoo (Murders Karoo) where bandits and murders sought refuge for crimes committed in Cape Town.
We start our decent from the high plateau towards the coast, descending through some desolate areas before reaching the fertile Ceres valley and a landscape transformed by fruit orchards and other crops. Dropping further through the spectacular Bain’s Kloof pass as we continue on the last stretch before reaching our destination, the spectacular Cape Town, the tavern of the seas and the end of your collection of Karoo memories tour.

The Eastern Cape Province on the South Eastern coast of South Africa is the most diverse of our nine provinces. All of the Worlds biomes are represented in this hidden gem of natural beauty, a kaleidoscope of the natural, cultural and historical wealth that is South Africa.

Day 1
East London to Wild Coast Hotel.

Meet and greet by Alan Tours before our departure for to Wild coast. We cross the Kei River into the Old Transkei, an independent state under the apartheid government. Leaving the N2 we enter the picturesque rural areas where the roads get rougher and the scenery becomes more attractive, we wind our way to the coast through spectacular scenery. We check into our hotel and enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2
Wild Coast and Nature reserve

Wake up for tea and coffee. We set off on a walk on the deserted beach towards the local river mouth before breakfast. Return through the coastal forests for a well-deserved breakfast.
After breakfast we set off to explore either the scenic wonderland of this rural environment and beautiful coastline by vehicle or we take a packed lunch and head for the Dwesa game reserve, crossing the Mbashe river by canoe for the remote beauty of this nature reserve. We set out to explore deserted beaches, the promise of spotting the southernmost crocodiles in Africa. Rhino, Buffalo, Zebra and many species of antelope that inhabit the grass plains above the shore. We discover unusual rock formations, bleached whalebones and ancient Khoikhoi middens overlooking a rusted wreck lying under the blue Indian Ocean.

Day 3
The Wild Coast and Nature reserve.

Wake up at your leisure before breakfast. After breakfast we drive into the reserve for a walk through tall canopy forests to a scared waterfall. Lunch at the hotel and rest of day at leisure relaxing around the swimming pool, walking through shaded forests

Day 4
Wild Coast to Amatole Mountain retreat

Early breakfast before checking out and departing via the heartland of Nelsons Mandela’s birth, we visit the modern museum and area where this iconic leader was first schooled and grew-up while making our way to a mountain retreat in the heart of the mystical Amatola Mountains. We check into our accommodation overlooking deep valleys and indigenous forests, an area of myth and legend, deep, forests, tinkling streams and gossamer waterfalls.


Day 5
Mountain Retreat.

Leisurely wake up for breakfast after which we have opportunities to go shopping at quaint Hippy colonies, offering displays of well-crafted pottery, modelled clay figurines and other art. Eco-shrine and Labyrinth to nurture your esoterically well-being. Take a walk through forests with ancient yellowwood trees in remote valleys where tannin stained streams tumble like gossamer over granite boulders or simply relax around the warmth of your own log fire at your individual mountain chalet.

Day 6
Mountain Retreat to Karoo Game Reserve.


After breakfast we depart for the Great Karoo, passing through historic and architecturally interesting Karoo towns for lunch en-route for a well-established Karoo Game reserve set on the edge of the vast plains, amongst rugged mountains and gentle plateaus.

Day 7
Karoo Game reserve.

Wake up for tea/coffee and rusks before departing on an early morning game drive. Searching the game filled plains for the apex predator the Cheetah while we enjoy the fresh morning air in this undisturbed environment. Return for breakfast in the restaurant.

Midday is a time to relax on your own. In the afternoon we again depart for a game drive, viewing a wide variety of African plains and other game on this vast landscape, including herds of Springbok, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Red Hartebeest, Gemsbok, Eland, Ostrich, Ground squirrels, Meerkats, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino, Brown Hyaena and Cheetah, including a wide variety bird life that make these plains and valleys their home.

Day 8
Karoo Game reserve to Baviaanskloof

Early wake up for the last game drive in these magnificent settings, before breakfast and our departure for the Baviaanskloof wilderness area and world heritage site. We continue through the Little Karoo to Willowmore where we stop for a well-deserved lunch break before entering this scenic wonderland. We drive slowly through this ancient wonderland and reach our destination in the late afternoon, a series of beautifully constructed chalets hidden in natural rock on top of a ridge with a stunning view into the valley’s and crevices below. We meet for a gourmet dinner in a restaurant with similarly stupendous views or an unusual experience in a huge cave before retiring for a good night’s rest.


Day 9
Baviaanskloof to Port Elizabeth

An early morning wake up for coffee and tea before we set off on a game drive through this fascinating wilderness area. We view the rich bird life learn about the many medicinal plants from your local field guide where streams tinkle and laugh through strewn boulders as we head back for the lodge to check out and depart through the rest of the valley.

We continue into the Baviaanskloof, mega – reserve wilderness area, descend into the mighty valley of the baboons through the twisting and turning pass that brings us to the top of the pass, criss-crossing rivers, narrow winding roads ascending and descending valley’s and peaks until we exit on the eastern side where we pass through extensive citrus orchards, scented sweetly in spring with the millions of white blooms, we continue to the picturesque farming town of Patensie where we stop at a Farm stall with a wide selection of preserves and traditional foods.

Continuing to Hankey we visit the largest Sundial in Africa and Sarah Baardman’s grave, a Khoikhoi woman, born in Hankey in 1787 and coerced to leave South Africa as an exhibition. She was re-buried here, where she quietly overlooks the fertile Gamtoos valley of her birth, before departing for Port Elizabeth along the southern coastline and our luxury Guesthouse accommodation on the Beachfront of the cleanest City in South Africa.

Day 10
Port Elizabeth Marine Tour and Addo Elephant National Park

Early pick up after breakfast. Arrive at the small boat harbour in the Port Elizabeth harbour. Check in and board the boat. Under expert guidance we embark on a 3-hour odyssey into Algoa bay. We search the protected waters of the bay for Dolphins, Seals, Sharks and the seasonal Humpback and Southern Right Whales that birth and breed in these temperate waters.

We head for the historical St Croix island group with the largest colony of African Penguins in the world. We return to the harbour and lunch at the Yacht club, where the setting is wonderful and the food great.

After lunch we depart for the Addo Elephant National Park. We enter the park, arriving at the main camp where we check into our accommodation. We then continue our game drive in the tour vehicle. Addo Elephant National Park is home of more than 400 Elephant, the other members of the Big 5, Leopard, Buffalo and the apex predator, the Lion. Returning in time to board the Park’s open game drive vehicle for a memorable sunset game drive complete with evening drinks. On your return join Alan Tours around the open fire for a traditional braai under African skies, quietly listening to the sounds of the night while watching the star encrusted sky for falling stars and passing satellites.

Day 11
Addo Elephant National Park and Elephant Back Safari

Early wake up for coffee / tea and rusks, we depart on an early morning game drive, viewing a wide variety of African big game in these vast thickets and plains. Over 450 Elephant, Cape buffalo, the shy Leopard and the awesome Lion live side by side with Warthog, Zebra, Kudu, Eland and Red Hartebeest in this 40 thousand hectare game reserve. A rich bird life and diverse botanical component make this reserve a favourite game reserve for many enthusiasts.

Returning to the rest camp we take breakfast at the park restaurant, allowing some down time to relax before heading out of the park into the nearby Zuurberg Mountains where we settle in for a light lunch at this historic Inn. After lunch we descend into the valley below to meet the three Elephant Bulls that will take you through this privately owned reserve on their backs viewing the Giraffe, Eland and Zebra in the area. After an experience of a lifetime we head slowly back up the pass the Mountain Inn for dinner before returning to the Park a well-earned rest.

Day 12
Addo Elephant National Park to Port Elizabeth

Early wake up for those who choose to join Alan tours on the last game drive, it is at this time of day when we stand a good chance of observing some of the nocturnal creatures before they lie up for the day. Return for breakfast at the restaurant before checking out and the return trip to Port Elizabeth through the park and the end of the tour.
