More The famous Garden Route
The Garden Route is considered by many to be the Crown in the Crown Jewels that is the treasure chest of destinations to be found in South Africa, a country with the well-deserved reputation of being the most beautiful country in the world.
It stretches from the superb city of Cape Town seemingly held protectively to the bosom of the imposing massif of Table Mountain to the West, the oldest centre in the country to the coastal paradise of Port Elizabeth on the sunshine coast, the second oldest city to the east.
It is a magnificently diverse in its natural beauty. A land that offers endless golden beaches that fringe the blue waters of the Indian Ocean where huge swells born, deep in the southern Ocean explode in great plumes of white spray along the Tsitsikamma coast.
The plain along which the route runs is bordered to the north by the steep mountain ranges of the Cape Fold mountain system, a relic range of mountains once higher than the Himalayans and densely clothed in a carpet of thick Fynbos (Fine Bush) the most diverse plant kingdom on the planet with over 9000 species.
Tall bluffs overlook placid lagoons at Knysna where leisure boats draw happy white patterns on the calm blue surface, where the ancient Khoikhoi people, the first nation of the world, our ancestors, once harvested seafood from the wealth of the intertidal zone.
The Garden Route is packed with activities and interesting sites to be seen, Monkey and Elephant sanctuaries, Predator parks and birds from around the world in the largest free flight aviary anywhere. High octane activities like the World’s highest Bungy jump and awesome Zip lines that wiz you, up high through the indigenous canopy forest. There are quiet forest walks, Bird watching and canoe trips on amber coloured rivers. Safari’s in open game drive vehicles up close and personal with Africa’s Big 5 in private and state game reserves.
