Kruger National Park Panorama Route
Johannesburg into the Drakensberg
Meet and greet in Johannesburg by Alan Tours. We board the tour vehicle and depart for the Mpumalanga (place where the sun rises) Panorama route taking in the scenery which becomes more picturesque as we approach the escarpment that finally descends towards the low lands known as the Lowveld.
We check into our historic accommodation set on the edge of the pass that descends the escarpment in the foothills of the Drakensberg and enter what is known as the Panorama route.
Panoramic drive through Drakensberg
Meet for a hearty breakfast before we check out and set off to explore the wonderful sights of this historic and spectacular area - an area dotted with the names of places that conjure up images of wonder and awe. Names such as God’s window - a stunning view point overlooking the simmering lowlands, where, on a clear day, one can see the Indian Ocean shimmering off the Mozambique coast.
We stop at a wonderful bush restaurant for a traditional South African meal.
This is prepared and cooked on an open fire and served while surrounded by huge boulders, on the banks of the crystal waters of the Blyde (happy) river in the Blyde river canyon.
We stop at a number of lookout points viewing breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls cascading down sheer drops in this impressive canyon – the third largest in the world.
We descend the escarpment through narrow passages and winding passes before arriving in the hot tropical Lowveld characterised by Marula trees, Silver leafed Terminalia and various Acacia species that, together with the gigantic Baobab trees, are typical to this hot dry environment, basking under the towering red cliffs of the escarpment.
We check into our overnight accommodation before heading out to enjoy an experience at the rehabilitation centre in a large private nature reserve at the foot of the mountain looming overhead. Lunch will be taken en-route
Mpumalanga area to Kruger National Park
Early wake up in this idyllic setting, under the giant riverine trees that line the banks of the Blyde river, at the base of the impressive escarpment as they reach up into the very sky above our heads. After a delicious breakfast, we depart and begin our journey through extensive privately owned game preserves, to the world famous Kruger National Park. We take a light lunch on the road or in one of the camps in the park, depending on the route of the day. As we enter the Kruger National Park, we stop to check in and take a comfort break, before immediately starting our game viewing experience. We travel through the park towards our overnight accommodation at a centrally situated camp known for its Lion sightings, amongst the many other species that occur in this diverse area. We arrive at our overnight accommodation in the early afternoon and check in before boarding the tour vehicle to search for the many animals, reptiles and birds in this magnificent, world famous National Park. The evening is one of the best times to view the creatures of the park, when they start becoming more active in their never ending search for food and water.
We return to our rest camp for the evening meal at the camp restaurant, before retiring to our rooms to pack our luggage for an early departure in the morning, and eventually relax on your own porch for a peaceful evening, listening to the awe-inspiring sounds of the African night. Here we listen to the sounds of the night creatures - the Fruit bats with their metallic pings as they silently fly between the fruit bearing trees; the Black backed Jackal calling in defense of its territory; the low hoot of the Eagle owl or the chirpy call of the smaller Scopes Owl sitting in the trees above; the far off call of the Spotted Hyena or, if you’re in luck, the deep bass of a pride of lions roaring in the dark. Nature will surely keep you entertained, until eyes heavy after a full day, you fall into a deep satisfying sleep.
As an optional extra, a booking of the camp’s night drive can be made, before the evening meal and a peaceful night’s rest.
Kruger National Park
With luggage pre-packed, a fresh cup of coffee with a traditional “Rusk” – a sweet, baked dry, bread roll - we get an early start and depart into the savanna’s searching for the many creatures; some coming to the end of their nocturnal wanderings, while others awakening to the new day; feeding and interacting with the world around them as we head towards our next overnight stop, a camp to the south of the park in a game rich area with superb scenery.
As we head into the southern section of the Park, stopping to view the many sights and sounds of wildlife such as Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra and many others, as well as a wide variety of birds, reptiles and insects that will keep you fascinated for hours, in the fantastic scenery in which they live. We break for a full breakfast, and then for a light lunch at convenient picnic sites en-route, before returning to our overnight rest camp to refresh, while Alan tours prepares a traditional braai (barbecue) on the open wood fire under the evening’s star-lit sky in this African wonderland.
We finally make our way to bed, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wild.
