Pick up at place of residence and depart for the historical Central suburb of Port Elizabeth, visit King George VI Art Gallery and Nelson Mandela Metro. Art Museum near the historical St. Georges Park cricket ground. Here we find the Epsac and Ron Belling Galleries. A break at the quaint Tin House gallery to enjoy an aromatic cup of coffee before again setting off to browse the many interesting art and antique shops in this characterful area. An area in which one finds many of the Gothic cathedrals and churches built by the competing denominations many years ago. We meet with some of the local artistic talent to view their works. Township art produced in small home studios and visit established artist producing sought after works in stylish studios. We depart for the Red Location Museum, a poignant memorial to the struggle for democracy in New Brighton, the oldest Township of town. If we are lucky we’ll meet ‘nette du Pleiss one of South Africa’s the best known artists. As we end the tour we take a break at a local tavern for some refreshments before returning to your accommodation.

There you meet other species such as Giraffe and Zebra in their natural environment. After riding these gentle creatures and walking through the valley Bushveld there is a chance to interact while you feed the bulls, after which they get a chance to swim and mud bathe at the waterhole. Pick up at place of residence. We depart for the Cape Recife Lighthouse and Nature reserve. A guided tour of the Samrec marine re-habilitation facility before continuing to the Light house at the point. Here we orientate and learn the history of Cape Recife and it’s working Lighthouse. We search the shoreline for the many species of Waders, Shore and Marine birds that utilize this important area. Here we look for interesting and endangered species like the Black oystercatcher and Rosette tern amongst the many different species.

We continue inland to the settlement ponds, an area rich in both bush and water birds, here we look for Warblers, Waders and a variety of water birds. Hadeda and Sacred Ibis are common with the possibility of catching a glimpse of a shy resident purple Gallinule. We enjoy a picnic in the area before departing for an inland birding experience at the Island thicket reserve where we discover the hidden secrets of the Eastern Cape sub-tropical thickets further down the coastline. Here we find a number of shy Robin species, and Mouse birds. The Grey headed Bush shrike, Little sparrow hawk and its big brother the African Goshawk flitting momentarily through the dim under story, then a flash of colour and deep whurring announces the arrival of the highly sought after Knysna Tauraco. We return to Port Elizabeth and your accommodation.

Dear Alan,

Thanks again for the terrific tour of Port Elizabeth last Monday week. We're not big on guided tours (especially Frank as you would have quickly gathered!!). You really opened up that part of the world for us so comprehensively, in fact from the beginning of time. I think spending the day with you and finishing up at Red Location Museum made such an impact on Frank that that's the reason why he's calling it the highlight of his month in South Africa.

We told our son Charlie, who works in PE, that you felt that the blacks know the customs and way of life of the whites and that maybe white people don't show enough interest or make enough effort to get to know the black residents. Anyway, I'm pleased to report that yesterday Charlie and his wife Melanie and their two little boys were invited to a party in the township and to quote him "we had an incredible time...amazing singing, traditional outfits, people unbelievably welcoming, so happy to have us there, wish you could have seen it all"

We're back in Australia now ( 'hit the ground running'). We're in the middle of renovating an old house and look back very fondly on those carefree days in your beautiful country.

08.00 a.m. Pick up at place of residence to board your boat at 08.30 for an awe-inspiring 3 hour marine safari into Algoa Bay. Visit the protected islands, host to the largest breeding colony of African Penguin in the World. The distant Bird Island group is home to the largest breeding colony of Cape Gannets in the world. The possibility of spotting five different species of Dolphins and the seasonal Southern Right and Humpback Whales when they come into the bay to birth and breed in the largest protected Bay in the Southern Hemisphere, a breeding ground for the oceans apex predator the Great White Shark.
